Plants are needed to provide oxygen for organisms. Without plants, Carbon Dioxide is going to build up in the atmosphere and increasing the greenhouse effect on earth. With increased Carbon Dioxide, it will become hard to breath and our normal climate is going to radically change, and become different from usual. Longer winters, short summers or vice versa. If there are not any trees then the rain water can't soak into the ground, and it just runs along on the top, shaping the land and taking out whatever is in its path.
If it continues there is a high chance of having the polar ice capes melt and covering the planet with water, or global warming.
Plants use photosynthesis, which takes placed within the chloroplast, to gather energy from the sun using pigments called chlorophyll and convert it into chemical energy and turn it into glucose. When that gets cut off, organisms that can't produce their own food starts to die off because they can not feed off of autotrophs and gather the energy needed to start cellular respiration within the mitochondria.
